The front sight blade is the replaceable insert that fits into the front sight ramp base on the barrel, providing the aiming reference for the front sight picture. S&W L and N Frame revolvers use a pinned or press-fit ramp base with a removable blade, allowing the sight blade to be replaced independently without replacing the entire ramp base.
