Factory Smith & Wesson used blued thumbpiece (cylinder release latch) for the J Frame Pre-36 Chief's Special revolver chambered in .38 Special. The thumbpiece is the lever pushed forward to swing the cylinder out for loading and unloading. The Pre-36 is the pre-model-number designation for the J Frame Chief's Special (steel frame, DA/SA) produced before S&W adopted model numbers in 1957–58. Gunsmith installation recommended.
