About the Model 1917: The S&W Model 1917 was produced for U.S. military service during WWI and WWII. It uses a 6-shot cylinder and feeds .45 ACP via half-moon clips, or .45 Auto Rim cartridges without clips. Model numbers were introduced in 1957–58 — the 1917 predates this system.
