Smith & Wesson Caliber Compatibility Guide
Smith & Wesson Parts Caliber Compatibility Guide
Understanding which parts interchange between different calibers is essential when ordering replacement components for your Smith & Wesson firearm. This guide explains caliber-specific parts versus universal parts for both revolvers and pistols.
Revolver Caliber Compatibility
.38 Special and .357 Magnum Revolvers
- Share the same frame and most internal parts
- Caliber-specific parts: Cylinders, barrels, forcing cones, extractors, ejector rods
- Interchangeable parts: Grips, springs, triggers, hammers, and most internal parts within the same frame size
- Note: .38 Special cylinders can physically fit in .357 Magnum frames, but this is NOT recommended for safety reasons
.44 Special and .44 Magnum Revolvers
- Share N Frame construction
- Most internal parts interchange between .44 Special and .44 Magnum
- Caliber-specific parts: Cylinders, barrels, forcing cones, extractors, ejector rods
.22 LR Rimfire vs Centerfire Revolvers
- J Frame Rimfire Models: 34, 35, 43, 53, 43C, 63, 317, 351C, 651
- K Frame Rimfire Models: 17, 18, 48, 617, 648, K22
- HAMMERS are NOT compatible between rimfire and centerfire due to different firing pin configurations
- All other internal parts (bolt springs, thumb pieces, rebound slides, grips, etc.) ARE interchangeable within the same frame size
General Revolver Rule
Within the same frame size (J, K, L, N, X): Grips, springs, triggers, and most internal parts interchange regardless of caliber. Only parts that directly contact the cartridge (cylinders, barrels, forcing cones, extractors, ejector rods, and hammers for rimfire) are caliber-specific.

- Caliber-specific parts: Barrels, slides, magazines, extractors, ejectors, firing pins
- Interchangeable within same frame size: Triggers, hammers, sears, disconnectors, springs (in most cases), grips, sights
.40 S&W Models

10mm Models
Models: 1006, 1026, 1066, 1076, 1086
- Caliber-specific parts: Barrels, slides, magazines, extractors, ejectors, firing pins
- Interchangeable within same frame size: Triggers, hammers, sears, disconnectors, springs (in most cases), grips, sights
- Note: 10mm models use a larger frame than 9mm/.40 S&W models
Magazine Compatibility
IMPORTANT: Magazines are caliber-specific and NOT interchangeable between calibers
- 9mm magazines only fit 9mm pistols
- .40 S&W and .357 SIG magazines may interchange (same case diameter)
- .45 ACP magazines only fit .45 ACP pistols
- 10mm magazines only fit 10mm pistols
- Magazine capacity varies by model (compact vs full-size)
M&P Series Caliber Compatibility
- M&P 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP share similar frames but have caliber-specific slides, barrels, magazines
- Many internal parts (triggers, sears, springs) interchange across M&P calibers
- M&P Shield parts are generally NOT compatible with full-size M&P (different frame size)
- M&P Bodyguard 380 parts are unique to that model
Key Rule: What's Caliber-Specific?
When in doubt: Caliber-specific parts include anything that touches the cartridge:
- Barrels
- Slides (pistols)
- Cylinders (revolvers)
- Magazines
- Extractors
- Ejectors
- Firing pins
- Hammers (rimfire vs centerfire only)
Internal fire control parts and springs often interchange within the same frame size/generation regardless of caliber.
