Function
The strain screw threads into the bottom of the grip frame to secure the mainspring (hammer spring). It also allows for trigger pull adjustment — turning the screw in or out changes mainspring tension, affecting trigger pull weight and hammer strike force. Proper adjustment ensures reliable ignition with a comfortable trigger pull.
Installation
Can be installed by the owner with basic tools after removing grips. Note: Too loose may cause light primer strikes; too tight may result in excessive trigger pull weight. A qualified gunsmith is recommended for final adjustment. Factory replacement parts are manufactured to exact OEM specifications and tolerances.
How to Identify Your S&W Model Number
Swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the model number. Model numbers were introduced in 1957–58. If no model number is present, your revolver may pre-date 1957 — contact us with your serial number and we can help identify the correct part.
