The cylinder stop (also called the cylinder bolt) and its spring are the components that lock the cylinder in alignment with the barrel at the moment of firing. The spring drives the stop upward into the cylinder's locking notches, indexing each chamber precisely in line with the bore. A worn or broken cylinder stop or spring causes the cylinder to fail to lock, resulting in misalignment between the chamber and barrel — a serious safety and accuracy issue.
