Genuine Smith & Wesson factory cylinder stop and spring removed from a K Frame Model 18 Combat Masterpiece and inspected. The cylinder stop, also called the cylinder bolt, is the timing component that locks the cylinder in alignment with the barrel for each shot.

Function

The cylinder stop is spring-loaded and rises through the bottom of the frame to engage notches in the cylinder, locking it in alignment with the barrel. It works with the hand: as the hand rotates the cylinder the stop drops, then rises again at lockup. The spring supplies the tension for that engagement. A worn stop or weak spring can cause accuracy problems, cylinder binding, or unsafe timing.

About the Model 18

Introduced in 1949 as the K-22 Combat Masterpiece, the Model 18 is a .22 LR target revolver on the medium K Frame, with adjustable sights, a 6-shot cylinder and typically a 4 inch barrel. It handles like a centerfire K Frame while being cheap to shoot.

How to Identify Your S&W Model

Swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the stamped model number. You should see "18" or a dash variant such as "18-1" or "18-2". Model numbers began in 1957-58, so a revolver without one may be a pre-model K-22. Contact us with your serial number if you need help.

Condition Notes

Used OEM cylinder stop and spring removed from a functioning Model 18. Normal wear consistent with use, engagement surfaces inspected for excessive wear or damage, spring tension good. May show finish wear or handling marks typical of fired revolvers.
