Function
The hammer block is a spring-loaded piece that sits between the hammer and the firing pin. It keeps the firing pin from moving forward even if the hammer is struck or the revolver is dropped, and only drops clear when the trigger is pulled fully to the rear. A worn, damaged, or missing hammer block can allow a drop fire, so never run a revolver without a functioning one.
Safety Testing After Installation
With the revolver unloaded, cock the hammer and release it without pulling the trigger. The hammer should not reach the firing pin. Only a full rearward trigger pull should allow the hammer to strike. If it fails this check, do not use the revolver until a qualified gunsmith repairs it.
About the Model 17
The Model 17 K-22 Masterpiece is a .22 LR target revolver on the medium K Frame, with adjustable sights, a 6-shot cylinder and typically a 6 inch barrel. It shares the handling of centerfire K Frames while being cheap to shoot, which makes it popular for target work and training.
How to Identify Your S&W Model
Swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the stamped model number. You should see "17" or a dash variant such as "17-1" or "17-2". Model numbers began in 1957-58, so a revolver without one may be a pre-model K-22. Contact us with your serial number if you need help.
Condition Notes
