Function

When you pull the trigger, the rebound slide moves forward to allow trigger travel. When you release it, the rebound spring pushes the slide back and resets the trigger. A worn rebound slide can cause a gritty pull, inconsistent reset, or trigger binding.

Bodyguard vs Centennial

The Model 49 Bodyguard has a steel frame and a partially shrouded hammer allowing single and double action. Do not confuse it with the Model 38/638 Bodyguard Airweight (aluminum frame) or the Model 40/640 Centennial (fully shrouded hammer, double-action only). Internal parts can differ between these, so confirm your exact model number.

How to Identify Your S&W Model

Swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the stamped model number. You should see "49" or a dash variant such as "49-1". Model numbers began in 1957-58. Contact us with your serial number if you need help.
