Function

When you pull the trigger, the rebound slide moves forward to allow trigger travel. When you release it, the rebound spring pushes the slide back and resets the trigger. A worn rebound slide can cause a gritty pull, inconsistent reset, or trigger binding.

About the Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight

Introduced in 1955, the Model 38 uses an aluminum alloy frame that brings weight down to roughly 14.5 ounces, about 6 ounces lighter than the steel-frame Model 49. Its shrouded hammer allows single and double action while resisting snagging on the draw, and it holds 5 rounds of .38 Special.

Bodyguard Variants

The Bodyguard family includes the Model 38 (aluminum Airweight), Model 49 (steel frame), and the modern 638 (stainless Airweight). Internal parts can differ between them, and Centennial models (40/640) have fully enclosed hammers, so confirm your exact model number.

How to Identify Your S&W Model
