Product Details

Genuine Smith & Wesson factory strain screw for the X Frame Model 500 revolver in .50 S&W Magnum. The strain screw is a critical component that adjusts mainspring tension, directly affecting trigger pull weight and hammer fall. Stainless steel construction provides corrosion resistance and durability. Used part in good working condition, perfect for repairs or as a spare.

About the Model 500

The Smith & Wesson Model 500 is the most powerful production revolver in the world, chambered in .50 S&W Magnum. Built on the massive X Frame platform (the largest frame size S&W produces), the Model 500 was introduced in 2003 and generates over 2,600 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. This hand cannon is designed for hunting the largest and most dangerous game, including bear, elk, and African plains game. The X Frame is significantly larger than the N Frame, requiring specialized parts throughout.

Function & Compatibility

The strain screw threads into the bottom of the grip frame and bears against the mainspring. By adjusting the strain screw in or out, you can increase or decrease mainspring tension, which directly affects trigger pull weight and hammer fall energy. Proper adjustment is critical - too light and you may get light primer strikes, too heavy and the trigger pull becomes excessive. This is specifically designed for the X Frame Model 500 chambered in .50 S&W Magnum.

X Frame Platform

The X Frame is Smith & Wesson's largest revolver frame, introduced specifically for the Model 500. It's substantially larger and stronger than the N Frame used for .44 Magnum revolvers. Due to the massive size and power of the .50 S&W Magnum cartridge, X Frame parts are not interchangeable with other S&W frames. Always verify you're ordering X Frame specific parts for your Model 500.

How to Identify Your S&W Model

To determine your Smith & Wesson revolver model number, swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the model number stamped into the metal. You should see "500" or a dash variant. Model numbers began in 1957-58. For the Model 500, you'll also see "X Frame" markings. Contact us with your serial number if you need assistance identifying the correct parts.

Installation & Specifications

  • Gunsmith installation recommended for proper adjustment
  • Requires removal of grips and access to grip frame
  • Adjustment affects trigger pull weight and hammer energy
  • Improper adjustment can cause light strikes or excessive trigger pull
  • Factory OEM part manufactured to exact S&W specifications
  • Used part inspected for thread condition and functionality
  • Compatible with X Frame Model 500 .50 S&W Magnum revolvers
  • Stainless steel construction

Adjustment Notes

The strain screw allows fine-tuning of your revolver's action. Turning the screw clockwise (in) increases mainspring tension, resulting in heavier trigger pull but more reliable ignition. Turning counter-clockwise (out) decreases tension, lightening trigger pull but potentially causing light primer strikes. Always test fire after adjustment to ensure reliable ignition. Due to the power of the .50 S&W Magnum, proper mainspring tension is critical for safety.

Condition Notes

This is a used OEM strain screw removed from a functioning Smith & Wesson Model 500 revolver. Shows normal wear consistent with use. Threads have been inspected and are in good condition. Stainless steel finish may show minor wear typical of used revolvers.
