Function

The mainspring, also called the hammer spring, provides the force that drives the hammer into the firing pin. Tension is adjusted at the strain screw: more tension gives more reliable ignition with a heavier pull, less tension lightens the pull but can cause light primer strikes.

How to Identify Your S&W Model

Swing out the cylinder and check behind the yoke on the frame for the stamped model number. Model numbers began in 1957-58, so a revolver with no model number may be older.
