Smith & Wesson began using model Numbers in 1957.
Most revolvers made before 1957 had names (Examples: Chief Special, Military & Police, Highway Patrolman) These are also called pre model (Examples (Chief Special Became the Model 36 & is Called Pre Model 36)
(Model #’s are stamped on the frame only visible with the cylinder open
(Examples Mod 36, Mod 36-1, M 36 ect.) Some pre model parts are the same as revolvers that have model #’s stamped on them
Extractor rods for all pre models are right hand thread. Starting in 1959 stamped model revolvers were changed to left hand thread. - usagunsandgear
