Troubleshooting S&W J-Frame Model 36 Single-Action Lockup Issues

If you have a vintage Smith & Wesson Model 36 (no dash) that works fine in double action but fails to catch or lock when pulling the hammer back manually in single action, you are dealing with a break in the single-action engagement loop.

Because older J-frames feature hand-fitted lockwork, pinpointing the exact cause requires a process of elimination—starting with simple maintenance before moving to internal parts inspection.

  • Congealed Grease and Debris (Most Common): Decades of dried oil, lint, or old cosmoline inside the frame can keep the internal sear or trigger nose from pivoting fully forward to engage the hammer notch.

If thorough cleaning and spring inspection do not resolve the issue, avoid stoning or filing critical engagement surfaces yourself. Incorrect angles can lead to an unsafe "push-off" condition.
