S&W Rear Sight Parts Guide:
By USA GUNS AND GEAR (Update 2026)
To get the right parts for your Smith & Wesson revolver, you need to identify which components are Universal (fit all years) and which are Generation-Specific (changed in 1992-1993).
1. The Elevation System (Universal: 1957–Present)
The elevation adjustment hardware has remained functionally the same for over 60 years. These parts are compatible across K, L, and N frames regardless of whether the sight is "Square Tang" or "Rounded Tang."
-
Elevation Screw: Threads through the sight leaf.
-
Plunger & Spring: Sits under the screw head to provide the "click" adjustments.
-
C-Clip (Retaining Clip): Snaps onto the bottom of the screw (under the leaf) to hold the assembly together.
2. The Windage System (Standardized Components)
Like the elevation system, the internal windage components are largely standardized, though they are often sold as a "Windage Kit."
-
Windage Screw: The horizontal screw that moves the rear sight blade left or right.
-
Windage Nut: A small, specialized nut that secures the screw.
-
Rear Sight Blade: Available in different heights (e.g., .125", .146", .160").
-
Installation Note: Replacing a windage screw typically requires shearing the old screw to remove the blade, meaning you almost always need a new windage screw and nut when changing the rear blade.
3. The 1992-1993 Engineering Change (The "Tang" Difference)
This is where customers often get confused. The change in the early 90s (around the 686-4 transition) affected the Sight Leaf and the Mounting Screw, not the adjustment internals.
| Feature | Old Style (Pre-1992) | New Style (Post-1993) |
| Sight Leaf (Tang) | Square Tang: The front tip is square. The leaf is longer. | Rounded Tang: The front tip is rounded. The leaf is shorter. |
| Forward Mounting Screw | Specific thread/length for solid frames. | Standardized for factory drilled/tapped frames. |
| Frame Style | No factory holes under the sight. | Three factory holes for scope mounts. |
Summary for Customers
"If you only need to replace the Elevation Screw, Windage Screw, or Rear Blade, our standard K/L/N frame kits will work for your revolver regardless of its age.
However, if you are replacing the Entire Sight Leaf (The Tang) or the Front Mounting Screw, you must check your frame. If your current sight has a flat, square front, you need 'Square Tang' parts. If it is rounded and your frame is factory-drilled for a scope, you need 'Rounded Tang' parts."
